Posted by sawaru | Category: Games & Console, Music & Entertainment, Portable Media Player & Storage, Toy, Trend Watch & News

sony-psp-2000-slim.jpgA PSP modder jube808, has modded PSP with DIY touchscreen function. His project, named Pspzproject, aims to bring full touchscreen support to the handheld, along with increased battery life and a re-designed control pad.

The on-screen keyboard looks pretty responsive, and can be used with fingers or a stylus. Such a mod is probably making PSP homebrewers salivate with PSP/DS hybrid potential. Another video has a closer look at the whole rig.

2 new Sony Cyber-shot up the trends

Posted by sawaru | Category: Digital Camera

Sony-T77_Green_Front_OpenNew 10-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700’s 4GB flash drive will store close to 1,000 full-resolution photos, and it also has a Memory Stick slot so that users can expand the storage capacity. Sony’s other new offering, the Cyber-shot DSC-T77 (pictured below), comes with a Memory Stick slot only.

Both new cameras also have other enticing features going for them. Sony has officially climbed aboard the touchscreen bandwagon with both cameras; both offer roomy touchscreens with 16-by-9 aspect ratios. The DSC-T700 offers a whopping 3.5-inch diagonal LCD touchscreen with a 210 pixel-per-inch resolution; the DSC-T77 offers a smaller-but-still-big 3-inch LCD touchscreen.

PSP 2.0 a multi-touch mobile console?

Posted by sawaru | Category: Games & Console, Mobile Phone, Multi Touch

psp_patent_touch_01 Sony an electronics giant’s application to the US Patent and Trademark Office details a “handheld device with touchscreen and digital tactile pixels”. The device’s functions are somewhat hazy, but the patent suggests that individual ‘tactile pixels’ - pressure points, essentially - could serve as an alternative control mechanism to the main touchscreen.

The patent application states that potential uses for the invention could include everything from a game device to phones, portable media players and email gadgets.

But how could an array of “digital tactile pixels” positioned around the edge of a palm-sized touchscreen work? Well, if the invention were used as a phone, then it’s possible that several digital pixels could be put on either side of the main touchscreen and be used as menu shortcuts. A line of sensors could trigger number-key presses.

Alternatively, if used on a games device, then perhaps the pixels could serve as a way of better controlling on-screen action.

Sony PSP touch screen patent

Posted by sawaru | Category: Games & Console

psptouchme Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) was granted a patent on Friday for a “hand-held [sic] device with touchscreen and digital tactile pixels.” It’d be a stretch to say any of this is explicitly indicative of a PSP 2.0 or PSP phone, but it is interesting to note that “game device” is listed as one of the potential applications, alongside a plethora of other sony handhelds: phone, portable media player, email device, web browser device or navigation device.

Touch Trends still Hot across Industries

Posted by sawaru | Category: Digital Camera, GPS Navigation & Guidance System, Mobile Phone, Trend Watch & News

So soon after the madness that was PC Show 2008 last week, it’s now time for the annual CommunicAsia technology fair held at the Singapore Expo. Unlike the PC Show, CommunicAsia is a bona fide tradeshow meant for companies to show off their new products and technologies. Though many things like network and enterprise equipment won’t really appeal to ordinary consumers, these are the things that eventually determine what kinds of services you will see from your operators in the near future. Short of showing you pictures of servers and network antennae, here’s a brief preview of what to expect from CommuniAsia 2008.

Thanks to the iPhone, touchscreen phones are now hot items. Samsung has announced the Omnia SGH-i900 (It has nearly everything the iPhone doesn’t have and it’s already available in Asia)and will be showcasing it. Garmin will set up shop as well to display its nuvifone. We’ll be bringing you more information about those over the next few days.

Let’s not forget mobile phones. Aside from all the touchscreen-enabled ones, new handsets will be announced by some of the major players. Nokia Tube may not participate directly in CommunicAsia, but it’s also when the Finnish company holds Nokia Connection.

Sony Ericsson also has a press conference lined up. Going by the rumors that have been making their way across the Internet, we may just see a new Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-shot.

(This Cyber-shot may render your dedicated digital camera obsolete with its 8.1-megapixel camera module and heaps of imaging features. Image stabilization? Check. Autofocus? You got it. Face detection? Sure. Xenon flash? Of course.)

HDR-SR12 daily usage review

Posted by admin | Category: Digital Camera

Sony’s Handycam HDR-SR11 is among the cream of the hard-drive AVCHD crop right now.

The same is true for its sister, the HDR-SR12, since the only difference between them is the size of their respective hard drives. The SR11 sports a 60GB drive, while the SR12 packs 120GB into its attractive HD-recording body.

sony-hdr-sr12 In a most welcome step up from last year’s SR7, the SR11 offers full 1,920×1080 HD capture, thanks to its maximum 16-megabit-per-second AVCHD recording mode. The other three AVCHD recording modes record at 1,440×1,080 resolution, like last year’s models.

At the top AVCHD quality level, you can fit up to 7 hours and 10 minutes of video on the camcorder’s 60GB hard drive. If you bring the quality level down to the minimum HD setting of 5Mb per second, you can fit up to 22 hours, 50 minutes of video. Stepping down to standard definition, you can record up to 14 hours, 40 minutes of video at the highest quality setting and up to 41 hours, 50 minutes at the lowest-quality setting. The NP-FH60 lithium ion battery gives you up to 90 minutes of continuous recording time, according to Sony, though you should expect more in the range of 40 minutes to 50 minutes during regular use when recording to the hard drive.

PSP touchscreen is a "must"

Posted by admin | Category: Games & Console

Portable hardware is becoming more and more popular, but I am interested in exploring what is deemed acceptable in the tough balance between hardware size and quality.

No doubt companies do market research on what consumers deem an appropriate size for a portable system, but is the current "midpoint" what we want?

sony-psp-2000-slimCurrently we have Sony’s PSP competing with the Nintendo DS, and the new Apple iPhone looks promising.

Both Nintendo and Apple have a touch-screen. The PSP doesn’t, but it has a much nicer screen and a generally more mature shelf of games.

As gamers, what do we want? Would open source make it better? (as the homebrew scene on PSP suggests…)

As a piece of portable hardware for ‘everything’ - games, movies, browsing, music, tell me what you would like to see, and hopefully the whitecoats will see this, stand up and pay attention.
For the current generations hardware, I would like to see a screen as big as an entire PSP and make it a touch screen.

Sony DSC-T300 early review

Posted by admin | Category: Digital Camera

dsc-t300 Sony’s latest T series camera, the Cyber-Shot DSC-T300 looks and feels very similar to past models.

It sports the same touch screen style interface found on its predecessor, the Cyber-Shot DSC-T200, and has seen an upgrade to the sensor which now sits at 10.1 megapixels. The usual array of features are also present, however, the camera is hampered by a few image quality issues and some annoying interface quirks.

As with the previous model, the key selling point here is the fashion-oriented design coupled with the touch screen interface. This combination gives the camera an extremely suave, minimalist feel, with the entire back of the unit occupied by the mammoth 3.5in screen.

However there are some issues. The touch screen still requires a fairly firm press and the interface lags a little at times which becomes frustrating for experienced camera users. We found we could navigate a regular button-based menu much faster than we could the T300’s menu.

Sony DSC T70 review

Posted by admin | Category: Digital Camera

 image

The Sony DSC-T70 is an ultra-compact, stylish digital camera from Sony. The primary attraction for many potential buyers is the T70’s large 3-inch touch screen interface, but it also sports a 3x Carl Zeiss zoom, an 8.1 megapixel sensor, image stabilization, and face detection. With 10 different scene modes, this camera is sure to have a little bit of something for everyone.

The T70 offers the following primary modes:

  • Auto: Standard fully automatic mode with limited adjustments (flash mode, macro, etc.)
  • Program Auto: User controls white balance, AF mode, metering, and ISO
  • Scene: User selects from a list of preset configurations for different shooting situations
  • Movie: Fairly basic video recording mode
  • Playback: Image review and retouching takes place in this mode

Without much in the way of manual control, the T70 (like its big brother, the Sony T20) is truly a point-and-shoot camera designed to appeal to fashion- and gadget-conscious users looking for the T200’s unique look and interface at a slightly lower price.

A detailed listing of specs and features can be found at the bottom of this review.
