Google Android on HTC delayed

Posted by sawaru | Category: Mobile Phone, Smartphone, Software

android_phone.pngRunning Google Android on HTC could be push back to early 2009 the release of the cellphone maker’s first phone using the Google mobile operating system. The company rejects assertions by Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry that both technical and minimum payment issues are affecting the release and insists that the phone is on track for a fall 2008 launch. The researcher’s belief “does not match the facts,” the firm says.

The late 2008 launch is widely believed to be part of a high-profile release for not just HTC but also T-Mobile USA, which has been all but confirmed as launching its nationwide 3G network on October 1st and may launch the HTC device, often rumored to be the Dream touchscreen phone, as a companion to wider access for the carrier’s faster data speeds and improved call quality.

Most other Android phones aren’t slated to launch until early 2009 and are heavily rumored to have been partly hindered by delays in the Android software itself. LG, Motorola, Samsung, and others are part of the Open Handset Alliance instrumental in promoting Android.

LG top in touchscreen mobile phone sale

Posted by sawaru | Category: Mobile Phone, Smartphone

lg-ku990-official Korea-based LG is nonetheless one of the largest manufacturers of any cellphone type and reports selling 27.7 million phones in the April-to-June quarter, pushing past Sony Ericsson’s 24.4 million. The electronics giant is likely to assume third place in world market share after Nokia’s 122 million phones and Samsung’s expected higher numbers. These two companies have both seen their average selling prices drop as their sales balance shifts to lower-cost phones.

LG on Monday revealed that it has sold about 7 million touchscreen cellphones since the company first introduced a full touch device through the Prada Phone in early 2007. The company claims to have the "leadership" of the category and notes that two million of these are the KU990 Viewty camera phone; the next most popular devices are the North America-focused Venus and Voyager at 1.6 million and 1.3 million examples each, according to the company. The remaining 2.1 million are split between the Vu as well as models that are largely only available in Europe or Korea.

Typhoon complaints to many touchscreen device manufactures

Posted by sawaru | Category: Trend Watch & News

Typhoon’s complaint alleges that defendants have infringed and continue to infringe its US Patent 5,379,057 issued 3 January, 1995 and entitled “Portable Computer with Touch Screen and Computer System Employing Same,” and US Patent No. 5,675,362 issued October 7, 1997 and entitled “Portable Computer with Touch Screen and Computing System Employing Same."

It launched litigation over the alleged infringements in December 2007 against Dell. Now, Typhoon has added Apple, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Lenovo, Panasonic, HTC, Palm, Samsung, Nokia and LG Electronics to the list of companies it is litigating against.

“The addition of these defendants is a further step in protecting Typhoon’s IP from being unfairly exploited. Hopefully, the world of potential infringers will take notice that it is the company’s intent to aggressively protect its intellectual property,” said Typhoon’s director of legal affairs and licensing, Hofheimer, Gartlir & Gross lawyer, Craig Weiner.

LG - KS360 not yet a touchscreen phone

Posted by sawaru | Category: Mobile Phone

lg-ks360.jpg

Some people dislike touchscreen mobiles because they’re rarely able to provide any physical typing feedback. But LG’s proven that it has at least one finger on the button, with the launch of a slider phone sporting a bold arrangement of physical keys.

The KS360 doesn’t have a touchscreen, so users must navigate their way around the phone’s 2.4in display using the circular raised keys that are neatly arranged underneath the screen. There’s also a slide-out Qwerty keyboard hidden underneath the 240 x 320 pixel resolution display.

Users will get a tri-band GSM connection and the phone also supports Edge. MP3 audio files can be played by the handset and there’s an FM radio built-in too. A two-megapixel camera is integrated into the back of the phone.

Bluetooth and a USB 2.0 port are included for moving data around, but further specifications are still few and far between.

A release date or price for the LG KS360 hasn’t been seen yet.

Touch Trends still Hot across Industries

Posted by sawaru | Category: Digital Camera, GPS Navigation & Guidance System, Mobile Phone, Trend Watch & News

So soon after the madness that was PC Show 2008 last week, it’s now time for the annual CommunicAsia technology fair held at the Singapore Expo. Unlike the PC Show, CommunicAsia is a bona fide tradeshow meant for companies to show off their new products and technologies. Though many things like network and enterprise equipment won’t really appeal to ordinary consumers, these are the things that eventually determine what kinds of services you will see from your operators in the near future. Short of showing you pictures of servers and network antennae, here’s a brief preview of what to expect from CommuniAsia 2008.

Thanks to the iPhone, touchscreen phones are now hot items. Samsung has announced the Omnia SGH-i900 (It has nearly everything the iPhone doesn’t have and it’s already available in Asia)and will be showcasing it. Garmin will set up shop as well to display its nuvifone. We’ll be bringing you more information about those over the next few days.

Let’s not forget mobile phones. Aside from all the touchscreen-enabled ones, new handsets will be announced by some of the major players. Nokia Tube may not participate directly in CommunicAsia, but it’s also when the Finnish company holds Nokia Connection.

Sony Ericsson also has a press conference lined up. Going by the rumors that have been making their way across the Internet, we may just see a new Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-shot.

(This Cyber-shot may render your dedicated digital camera obsolete with its 8.1-megapixel camera module and heaps of imaging features. Image stabilization? Check. Autofocus? You got it. Face detection? Sure. Xenon flash? Of course.)

Double touch screen gaining popularity

Posted by admin | Category: Mobile Phone, Trend Watch & News

If you have an affinity for pushing buttons, this is not going to be your year.

AT&T and Verizon Wireless have added two more touch-screen phones to their lineups. And you can expect more.

AT&T, of course, is known for selling the iconic iPhone. Selling it exclusively, I might add. But I can’t blame AT&T for not putting all of its eggs — er, Apples — in one basket.

So, it has introduced the LG Vu ($299 with a two-year contract and mail-in rebate).

As with the iPhone, buttons are minimal — just a small row along the bottom of the phone for making and ending calls and a couple along the side for locking the phone. Yet, navigating the Vu is a straightforward process because most of its touch-screen menus are clearly marked.

Still, the Vu isn’t intuitive.

It will take you six steps to accomplish something that should have taken two steps. I can’t even remember how many times I had to hit "OK" and "Yes" and "Done" to log into MySpace Mobile. I zoned out because the Vu was beginning to remind me of an annoying Windows PC.

The Vu also has a QWERTY keyboard similar to the one on the iPhone. But again, the Vu’s version isn’t intuitive. The keys are too close together, making typing with two hands awkward and typing with one hand really awkward. It does at least have tactile feedback.

Still, the Vu is pretty and sleek, duplicating the minimalist trend that’s been so popular in the LG Voyager. The phone is also light — so light that I didn’t think the battery was attached when I took it out of the box.

Korea touch phone boom

Posted by admin | Category: Mobile Phone, Smartphone, Trend Watch & News

korea-touch-boom2In Korea mobile Internet is the hottest issue among early adopters of technology in Korea. At www.cetizen.com, the largest online community of mobile phone users, the three most popular handsets these days are all touch-screen phones specializing in Web browsing ― Samsung’s Haptic, Pantech & Curitel’s CanU and LG’s Touch Web Phone.
These so-called full-browsing phones are selling at impressive rates. Samsung says that it has sold around 30,000 Haptic phones in 15 days since its launch on March 25, which is about the double the daily sales of other new models. Its hefty price tag ― 797,000 won ($800) without a rebate or a discount ― hasn’t been discouraging customers, the company says.
“It’s a bit expensive, but still we are in short supply. Retailers are even paying in advance to secure their volume,” a company spokesman said.
