Touchscreen kiosk helps veterans memorial visitors find names

New at the memorial is an electronic kiosk system installed in a masonry-and-glass building west of the large angel sculpture at the memorial. A computer touch-screen advises people where a veteran’s name can be located on the memorial.
Type in the first three letters of someone’s last name and you can find where the plaque is located.
One neat thing about the system is you can find names of living people on the granite tiles on the memorial’s walls, as well as names of veterans who have died. The memorial also includes the name of a Canadian Snowbirds aerial demonstration team pilot, Capt. Shawn McCaughey, who died in a crash while practicing for a show over Malmstrom Air Force Base last year.

Customers at two Richmond-area Hardee’s restaurants can use touch-screen kiosks to order and pay for their food.The kiosks are part of a test for franchise operator Boddie-Noell to see whether customer service improves.
"It is really all about speed of service, ordering accurately and giving customers another way to get their order quicker," said Jerry Allsbrook, senior vice president of marketing for Boddie-Noell, the largest Hardee’s franchisee in the U.S. It operates 346 restaurants in four states, including Virginia.
"In our business it is all about speed of service and convenience and shorter lines, and that is really what the kiosk does for us," he said.

Navater Brown expected to wait hours to see a doctor when she showed up recently at a Newark hospital emergency room with a cut on her leg.
But instead of signing in and waiting to explain her symptoms, Brown was immediately escorted to one of three check-in kiosks in Newark Beth Israel Medical Center’s emergency department. The wall-mounted device enabled her to enter her name on a touch screen, along with her birth date, sex and ZIP code.
Brown was then directed to key in the reason for her visit, leading her to select “pain” from a menu of descriptive phrases or terms. Next, she pointed out the problem area, her leg, on an outline of the body - there is one for men, one for women - that popped up on the screen.
With a single touch, Brown’s information was immediately relayed to the emergency department’s main computer, where a nurse reviewed it.
“It was fast and simple,” said Brown, 19, who found herself sitting in front of a nurse within 10 minutes of her arrival.
Kiosks have been used for years elsewhere, such as airports, to speed passengers through check-in. Now they are becoming more common in the health-care setting, especially
hospitals, where half of all emergency rooms are operating at or above capacity.
Administrators are desperately looking for ways to move patients through registration and evaluation faster.
“It cuts out handoffs and drives efficiency improvements,” said Ron Wince, a health-care efficiency.
Infobox create public awareness

VISITORS to the Kingfisher Centre can access the latest crime prevention advice from West Mercia Constabulary on a new interactive information stand.
The Infobox, the first of its kind for the force, has four touch-screen displays which people can use to log on to current appeals, police news, crime prevention information and job opportunities in the police.
The unmanned information point also warns shoppers about the use of mobile phones when driving, keeping your purse safe when shopping and not to leave sat nav equipment in view when leaving your car.
Insp Ian Joseph, from Redditch police, said the Infobox was part of the force’s commitment to be increasingly accessible by making it easier for the public to contact them for information.
“This will help our local communities interact with us more easily.
“It’s an excellent and exciting initiative, which takes us out into the busiest area of town.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how it’s received but I’m confident people will like it and want to take advantage of it,” he said.
