Apple push on DJing software

Posted by sawaru | Category: Music & Entertainment, Software

From the looks of the patent submitted on touchscreen DJ-ing program a very similarity to normal pair of vinyl turntables.

Apple-touchscreen-DJ-app-850-100 Of course, the existence of a patent application doesn’t guarantee that the software is in development, but Apple has frequently been rumoured to be working on some sort of touchscreen computer. And of course, the company’s iPhone and iPod touch products already enable you to get ‘hands-on’.

The patent application gives us a good idea of how the software might work. Digital music files would be represented by two slabs of virtual vinyl, and there would be crossfader and pitch adjustment controls. The diagram features waveform displays, too, while fingertip-powered scratching would also be possible.

Microsoft Zune playing pricey catch up

Posted by sawaru | Category: MP3 Player, Portable Media Player & Storage, Trend Watch & News

microsoft-zune-player-mix Microsoft is considered one of the more successful rivals to Apple but has historically lagged behind the iPod as it focuses on expanding its lineup to include the essentials rather than introducing a touchscreen player at the same time as the iPod touch in the fall of last year. The company launched a flash-based Zune roughly two years after Apple and this spring has just added TV shows, smart playlists, and other features present in earlier versions of Apple’s software.
Microsoft Entertainment and Devices chief Robbie Bach is less direct regarding the prospect of a Zune phone and first says that there are no plans to develop an in-house phone under the Zune label or a similar platform, but agrees with a consensus that an all-in-one device is inevitable. Establishing the Zune, its software, and an online store are part of a “broad investment” that will pay off later, he says. The official also notes that the company is “comfortable” with both hardware and software.

Could be too late for flash open screen project

Posted by admin | Category: Software, Trend Watch & News

The Open Screen Project by Adobe Systems could be too late as Adobe tries to put its Flash technology on a variety of devices.

adobe_systems-flash-apple_sci-jpg Besides Apple, Inc.’s iPhone and iPod touch, a majority of mobile devices do not have Flash installed. Adobe’s initiative does not make Flash open source, but eliminating barriers will make it more attractive to developers.

In the wake of Thursday’s announcement by Adobe Systems that it is launching the Open Screen Project to make it easier for developers to use the company’s Flash technology on a variety of devices, the lingering question is whether the move simply comes too late.

Over the last few years, the mobile  market has burgeoned into a multibillion-dollar industry, but Adobe has struggled to match its desktop market share. Its Flash software is installed on an estimated 98 percent of desktop systems, but only on 30 percent or so of mobile devices.

Adobe hopes its Open Screen initiative, which will go live in mid-2009, will help it serve Flash software to as many as a billion mobile devices and produce a more consistent screen performance. Adobe is partnering on the project with a number of tech and mobile companies — including Cisco, NTT DoCoMo, Sony Ericsson and Verizon Wireless — as well as a number of content providers — BBC, MTV and NBC Universal, to name a few.

"Adobe is spearheading the Open Screen Project with support from industry leaders who share a common vision to provide rich, interactive experiences across computers, devices and consumer electronics," said Shantanu Narayen, Adobe CEO. "A consistent, more open platform for developers will drive rapid innovation, vastly improving the user experience."

TG Sambo a PMP plus Digital TV

Posted by admin | Category: Music & Entertainment, Portable Media Player & Storage

TG Sambo’s new PMP is noteworthy at least because it doesn’t attempt to ape the iPod Touch’s GUI. The Korean media player also has a larger screen - at 4.8-inches - and aside from audio and video is capable of browsing the internet via a WiFi b/g connection and watching T-DMB digital TV. Hidden underneath the “Luxurious” menus is Windows CE 5.0, churning away on an Alchemy AU1250 700MHz processor.TG_Sambo_PMP_1

At the moment the PMP has only been confirmed for a Korean launch, but it’s not unusual for these gadgets to be picked up and rebadged for sale in North America and Europe. It could make for an interesting middle-ground between the iPod Touch and Nokia’s range of N-series Internet Tablets. However neither of those have mobile TV.

AVN-6610 great user experience

Posted by admin | Category: GPS Navigation & Guidance System

Features and performance
The AVN6610 comes with built-in DVD ROM-based GPS navigation as standard. Maps are provided by Navteq and include building outlines for major urban centers in the United States, as well an updated POI database with 8.3 million entries. On first connecting the device and installing the GPS antenna, we found that the navigation system took longer than expected to find its bearings–around 20 minutes of driving around. Once it did get its satellite fix, the system proved itself to be quite accurate, but not pinpoint-precise, often giving us our current location to within the nearest quarter block.  avn-6620

Destination entry for addresses is extremely straightforward, requiring users simply to key in the street number, street name, and city name via the onscreen keypad. Before entering a destination, users have to configure the map to focus on a specific area of the country, a feature we like as the system is then able to provide a more refined and relevant list of destination options by graying out letters for non-applicable address (on the other side of the country, for example) during the address entry. We also like the five programmable shortcut buttons along the bottom of the destination-entry screen for calling up common locations, as well as the one-touch Home button.

Rubber tipped stylus for your iPod & iPhone

Posted by admin | Category: MP3 Player

ipod-rubber-tip-stylus Preserve your pristine iPhone or iPod Touch screen with this rubber-tipped stylus and never miss-key sqwerty again. The iPhone’s interface is a revelation, but big sausage-like fingers make using the virtual keyboard damn fiddly – even with the auto-correct software. This four-inch stylus should sort your aim out a bit though and protect the screen from smears - although we doubt hardcore Apple-heads will approve of a bit of third-party hardware messing with the beautifully self-contained iPhone or Touch.

Highly competing the MP3 touch crown

Posted by admin | Category: MP3 Player

Currently there are plenty of benefits to using a touch-screen interface instead of traditional button navigation, including increased screen real estate, a cleaner look, and the potential for new ways of manipulating data using dragging, pinching, and swiping gestures. In practice, however, no one does touch-screen media players as well as Apple. In fact, we’re already starting to see some spectacular failures.

With the exception of the LXPI, the MP3 players shown here also include some type of wireless capability to complement their futuristic touch interfaces. Whether it’s the integrated Bluetooth of the Samsung P2, or the full Opera Web browser of the Archos 605 WiFi, these iPod Touch competitors have more to offer than discounted prices and pretty looks.

Gestures UI are making inroads

Posted by admin | Category: Multi Touch, Trend Watch & News

IT’S fair to say that one of the most striking images in the 2002 film Minority Report was its vision of computing in the future.

The sight of star Tom Cruise seamlessly searching layers of files and data through a combination of gestures and sweeps of his hand was inspirational to many, and prompted widespread musing as to when such interaction with machines would become a reality.

gestures-ui As it turns out, not as long as the movie predicted (it was set in 2054). Indeed, just six years on, gesture computing is fast becoming common.

At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Microsoft founder Bill Gates spoke of a future of gesture controls, a future of devices that respond to sound and touch rather than conventional input devices.

Many people are likely to have been introduced to gesture computing through Nintendo’s innovative Wii games console.

Its motion-sensing controller, enabling gamers to re-create the physical action of sports such as tennis and golf proved a winner for the company and boosted sales of the Wii ahead of its higher specced console rivals.
