Interpreting iPhone Touch-location

Interpreting Touch-location Data

The iPhone’s processor and software are central to correctly interpreting input from the touch-screen. The capacitive material sends raw touch-location data to the iPhone’s processor. The processor uses software located in the iPhone’s memory to interpret the raw data as commands and gestures. Here’s what happens:

Signals travel from the touch screen to the processor as electrical impulses.
The processor uses software to analyze the data and determine the features of each touch. This includes size, shape and location of the affected area on the screen. If necessary, the processor arranges touches with similar features into groups. If you move your finger, the processor calculates the difference between the starting point and ending point of your touch.

LG top in touchscreen mobile phone sale

Posted by sawaru | Category: Mobile Phone, Smartphone

lg-ku990-official Korea-based LG is nonetheless one of the largest manufacturers of any cellphone type and reports selling 27.7 million phones in the April-to-June quarter, pushing past Sony Ericsson’s 24.4 million. The electronics giant is likely to assume third place in world market share after Nokia’s 122 million phones and Samsung’s expected higher numbers. These two companies have both seen their average selling prices drop as their sales balance shifts to lower-cost phones.

LG on Monday revealed that it has sold about 7 million touchscreen cellphones since the company first introduced a full touch device through the Prada Phone in early 2007. The company claims to have the "leadership" of the category and notes that two million of these are the KU990 Viewty camera phone; the next most popular devices are the North America-focused Venus and Voyager at 1.6 million and 1.3 million examples each, according to the company. The remaining 2.1 million are split between the Vu as well as models that are largely only available in Europe or Korea.

Posted by sawaru | Category: Mobile Phone

Nokia expects to be in a position to officially announce its first mainstream touchscreen phone in the next few months.NokiaN96_2-not-nokia-tube-5800

While currently remaining well within the realms of industry speculation, initial rumblings following Nokia’s outline suggest that the company’s first handset out-of-the-mainstream-gate will be the 5800 Tube.

Looking not unlike a certain trend-defining phone created by Cupertino-based Apple Inc., and already tentatively referred to as something of an “iPhone killer,” the 5800 Tube is expected to hit the market by the close of summer 2008.

Samsung has recently unveiled a new high-end dual - sim touchscreen phone, named Samsung D980.

The major difference between the D980 and F480 is that the first handset comes with dual-SIM technology, allowing you to use two SIM cards at the same time. Also, the D980 only features tri-band GSM connectivity (900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz) with GPRS and EDGE, unlike the F480 which has 3G connectivity too. These aspects aside, the two phones are quite similar, when it comes to both their design and their capabilities. Among the features included in the D980, we have: a 2.6 inch TFT touchscreen display with 260K colors and 240 x 320 pixels, a 5 Megapixel camera with flash, auto focus and video recording, Bluetooth 2.0, Music and Video players, FM radio, Web and email capabilities, Instant Messaging, USB, expandable memory and so on.

Gigabyte UMPC priced from $556

Posted by sawaru | Category: Tablet PC & UMPC

Now it appears that pricing and OS for three versions of the touchscreen notebook will be available, the M912V running Vista and the M912X and M912M both running XP.

All three models will use a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU and have an 8.9-inch display.  The M912V will apparently be priced at around $656 and come with 1GB of RAM, both WiFi and Bluetooth, and use a 1,280 x 768 panel.  The M912X, meanwhile, will be priced at $620 for the same specs, while the M912M loses both Bluetooth and pixels, thanks to a mere 1,024 x 600 panel, to hit a $556 price.

The M912 measures 235 x 180 x 28~42mm and tips the scales at 1.2kg; there’s no optical drive, but there are three USB ports, audio, D-SUB video and an SD card slot.  Storage is courtesy of a 160GB hard-drive standard to each model.  Maximum battery life is quoted at 4hrs from the 4400mAh Li-ion pack.

Nokia patented Haptikos a touchscreen prototype

nokia-haptikos

Haptikos is only at the prototype stage at the moment, but lets hope Nokia gets its skates on and combines it with S60 Touch UI to create a killer touchscreen phone.

One of the big problems with touchscreens is the lack of physical feedback compared to pushing buttons. Nokia’s haptikos tactile touchscreen system could change all that by adding a layer than can be made dynamically bumpy, so it feels more like pressing real keys and less like just swiping a smooth surface.

Fat fingers touchscreen kit from Dancing Fingers

Posted by sawaru | Category: Industry, Mobile Internet Device, Mobile Phone, Smartphone, Trend Watch & News

dance-fingers3 Started as a fun finger Dance Dance Revolution game, the Dancing Fingers is designed for those people who have fat fingers. This has nothing to do with a person’s weight, but just the uneven distribution of fat cells on the digits. Some of those operations on the iPhone, like the QWERTY keyboard, are quite small and it is difficult for someone with enlarged fingertips to make precise touches.

These Dancing Fingers are designed to fit snugly on the index and middle fingers, so now “fat-fingered” people can have some full touchscreen capability. No more of hitting the wrong letter anymore.
