Toshiba have started 2008 faster than Road Runner in a new pair of Nikes, and what better way to round off January than with this stonking new tablet PC.

Mozilla releases Firefox Touch Screen UI Design for mobile

Posted by admin | Category: Mobile Phone, Software

Mozilla has been working on a mobile version of its open source Firefox browser for some time and now the company has taken the wraps off some of its initial design ideas, offering a sneak-peak of the interface that will drive Firefox Mobile for both classic and touch-screen phones.

The touch screen interface looks remarkably similar to Apple’s mobile version of Safari with a stop / reload button, and an address / search bar, plus the same star-bookmarking button found in the Firefox 3. As with mobile Safari, the page navigation is at the bottom of the screen with back / forward buttons as well as zoom controls and a tab switch button. For non touch screen devices, a virtual cursor is provided and controlled with the keyboard navigational keys, while other actions are performed through menus and submenus.

As a Firefox user on the desktop I believe the real appeal of Mobile Firefox will lie within the extensions, though so far the mockups don’t reveal any details on this. In any case, the XUL mockups are available for download in both touch-screen and classic versions so you can see how Firefox Mobile is shaping up.

As it turns out, they were working on two versions: one designed for touchscreen devices like the iPhone and another for traditional phones. Now Mozilla has finally given us a glimpse of their designs by posting the plans, mockups, and details of these two upcoming mobile browsers on the Mozilla wiki.

Although Opera Mini is a great mobile browser with tons of features, back on the desktop, Firefox has more users. So, when it comes time to choose a mobile browser, the one that syncs with your desktop browser of choice is likely to win out. Plus, if add-ons are developed for Mobile Firefox, it has the possibility of becoming a killer mobile application.

Samsung SGH-F700V

Posted by admin | Category: Mobile Phone

The iPhone for instance, may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I don’t know a single hard-bitten hack who has used the device who hasn’t fallen in love with its beautifully-designed GUI and almost perfectly executed touch-screen hardware interface.

Another indication of the popularity of a product is the number of companies and products attempting to copy its key ideas and use them. And the iPhone looks as if it’s going to have a pretty powerful influence here too: 2008 is set to be the year of the touch-screen and Samsung’s F700V is in the vanguard of products looking to knock Apple from its perch.

It’s a product that has great potential. Unsurprisingly it’s very similar in size and shape to the iPhone - it’s thicker at 17mm but otherwise there’s not too much in it. It looks pretty good too with its glossy, pinstriped front fascia and minimalist design. There’s just a single button adorning the front of the phone - just like the Apple device - while a mere three controls sit along the long right-hand edge: the trigger for the F700V’s three megapixel camera, a two-way volume rocker and a switch for locking and unlocking the device.

The F700V is, as you’ve probably already guessed, a touch-screen device, and one that you’d probably also expect to be inferior in quality to the iPhone, but the F700V has a couple of important advantages hidden up its tightly-tailored sleeve. The first of these is vibration feedback. Whenever you hit a button on the F700V’s 3.2in 240 x 440 screen it responds with a quiet beep and a light buzz. It sounds frivolous, but this feature contributes so much to the feel and usability of the interface that I wonder why other manufacturers haven’t done the same thing. It’s like having the best of both worlds - the flexibility and adaptability of a touch-screen, but with the feedback of physical buttons.

Cowon Q5W Wireless is Endless

Posted by admin | Category: Video Player

cowon q5w1

The Cowon Q5W aims to do everything a gadget-aholic may want in a portable video player. Unfortunately, its confusing dual interface and high price hold it back from greatness.

Cowon’s most ambitious product to date, the Cowon Q5W, is a super-charged, touch-screen portable video player (PVP) with an astounding list of features. The Cowon Q5W comes with a hefty price tag ($549 for 40GB, $599 for 60GB), however, and its dense, needlessly complicated feature set may overwhelm some users. Read the rest of this entry »

Sony Ericsson P1i

Posted by admin | Category: Mobile Phone

Sony Ericsson p1i Touch Screen Phone1Evolution and not revolution, but evolution in the right direction. The number one improvement is definitely the increased size of available RAM memory, providing true and unrestricted multitasking, much better stability (the tested proto unit hasn’t rebooted even once nor did it cause any other stability problems) and positive impact on overall performance. 3.2 Megapixel camera produces quality pictures and, well, tolerable video. Slightly improved transflective display works better in direct sunlight and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR provides faster connectivity.

Elegant design, solid build and high quality materials make the device look and feel really good. Software improvements, especially the support for plugins on the Activity screen, add to the comfort of use and enhance functionality.

Considering that we won’t see a “true” P990 successor (with 2.8″ screen and flip) before 2008, it may be considered worth getting not only for M600i users who get a lot of new features, but also for P990i owners struggling with all the problems caused by P990’s limited RAM memory. Acquiring UIQ Technology by Sony Ericsson gives hope for faster and “more unified” development and further improvements coming with firmware updates. Read the rest of this entry »

Sony Ericsson P990i 3G Touch Screen Phone

Posted by admin | Category: Mobile Phone

The future of communication is here

P990i_frontandside_image_premium_silver1The P990i is the latest in a line of P series smartphones from Sony Ericsson. A 3G smartphone that lets you leave your PC behind while travelling, yet access everything you need for effective communication. It’s all here, now. Previous smartphones in the range have been met with almost obsessive loyalty, making them a hard act to follow, and even today, when there are plenty of smartphone choices around the ‘P’ has a loyalty many others would love to emulate.

Announced last October it is in some ways a shame that the P990i appears just after Sony Ericsson’s M600i and just before its W950i. All three handsets run Symbian 9.1 and UIQ 3. We’ve already looked at the M600i, and will review the W950i as soon as we get our hands on one.

The handsets are aimed at different markets - the M and W share very similar hardware design, but the W has a rather nifty 4GB of internal memory and is aimed at music fans. Read the rest of this entry »
