Archos 5 and Archos 7 introduced
Posted by sawaru | Category: Portable Media Player & Storage
Archos did hinting on its new Internet Media Tables.Three new models have been introduced, the Archos 5 and Archos 7, which both include high-resolution touchscreens, WiFi, up to 320GB storage and slender casings, and the Archos 5g which adds 3G HSDPA cellular broadband.
The Archos 5 is available in 60GB, 120GB and 250GB capacities, with a 4.8-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen and 0.5-inch thickness, while somewhat curiously the Archos 5g only comes in one 30GB variety. The bigger Archos 7, meanwhile, has a 7-inch touchscreen (still at 800 x 480), either 160GB or 320GB capacity and is 0.63-inches thick.
So, not a particularly inspired naming scheme (and the design doesn’t really hold a candle to, say, the iRiver SPINN) but Archos’ legendary codec support, full internet browsing (either via WiFi or HSDPA) and VGA video recording direct to the PMP courtesy of the Archos DVR Station or a clip-on tuner. Archos are yet to announce availability or pricing.
Archos just revealed what that curtain tease was all about: the 6th Gen Archos 5, 5G and 7 series PMPs. The 4.8" flagship 5G ditches the tired interface and buttons of the Gen-5 device for a slick UI and touchscreen-only operation. It’s got Wi-Fi, HD video support, web browsing, email, a huge HDD (up to 250GB), and built-in HSPDA 3G connectivity. It’s also got dock connectors, GPS, DVR, video/audio recording and more. In short, it’s everything that the iPod touch isn’t, and I got to touch it.
The interface on the 5G is incredibly smooth, scrolling is similar to the iPod touch, and the included Opera web browser does zoom and looks excellent. The device is intuitive and the touchscreen is responsive and big enough to really enjoy movie watching.
The products will retail between $350 and $550 when they arrive in September (5), October (7) and January (5G). It’s a good day for the little portable-media underdog. Spec sheet down below. [Archos]
