HTC iPhone-killer unveils a worthy alternative

HTC unveils rival to Apple’s iPhone
HTC,a fast growing Taiwanese handset manufacturer, unveiled in London its new flagship product, the HTC Touch Diamond, a product that is widely expected to pose a challenge Apple’s iPhone.
Introducing the device that promises one-touch access to a number of features, including the mobile web, photos and music among others Peter Chou, president and CEO of HTC, declared 2008 the year of the mobile internet, and said his company, a relatively new player in the mobile telecommunications technology sector, was poised for another phase of rapid growth with the innovative phone.
Powered by Windows Mobile 6.1, the compact touch screen device — the latest update of HTC’s Touch smartphone line that has sold more than 3 million units worldwide since last June — features a revamped TouchFlo 3D interface. With a 2.8 inch display that allows users to zoom in on content with the touch wheel or tilt it by turning it on its side, the phone is a mere 11.5 mm thick, making it even thinner than the iPhone, and includes a 3.2 megapixel camera and 4 GB of storage.
HTC chief marketing officer John Wang said the new device runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, comes with 4 GB of internal storage with 256 MB flash and 192 MB RAM and runs on a Qualcomm MSM 7201A , 528MHz chipset. Other features include Bluetooth with EDR, minUSB, integrated GPS and Wi-Fi and 900 mAh battery which claims to offer a 4-hours standby talk-time on GSM.
With the price tag still undecided, the HTC Touch Diamond will be available later this quarter in Asia and the Middle East. The Middle East launch will be in Dubai in June.
HTC’s Chief Innovation Officer Horace Luke said the device could help the company gain market share. He said HTC has secured a number of operator deals, having worked closely with them to design the phone to their liking. In the UK alone, the phone will launch with all five of the country’s biggest networks. Orange, which is a partner, said it planned to roll out the phone across all 27 of its country markets.
Luke said HTC Touch is the world’s first phone to feature intuitive touch screen technology. “The phone presents a whole new way of managing touch screen-based devices by recognising and responding to the sweep of a finger across the screen. It is smart enough to differentiate between finger and stylus input and responds accordingly.”
‘What’s special about this phone is its TouchFLO feature, the new underlying touch screen technology developed by HTC. With TouchFLO you can access different functions just by swiping your finger in different directions on the phone’s 2.8-inch, 65,536-colour touch screen. Move your finger upward to display an animated, three-dimensional interface comprising three screens: contacts, media and applications. You can play around this interface by swiping your finger right or left across the screen, providing you access to a variety of features. This feature is also the enhancer of finger touch scrolling and browsing when navigating web pages, documents, messages and contact lists.”
